Dr. Sid Solomon Explains Composite Fillings

Article Written by Dr. Sid Solomon

Fillings are a very common dental procedure in my offices and are usually completed in just one appointment. While the tooth and surrounding tissue are numb, the dentist will remove decay as necessary. The space will be thoroughly cleansed and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed. If the decay was near the nerve of the tooth, a special desensitizing medication known as “gluma” will be applied for added protection. The filling will then be precisely placed and shaped, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.

It is normal to experience sensitivity to hot and cold when fillings are first placed; however, this will subside shortly after the tooth acclimates to the new filling.

You will be given post-care instructions at the completion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in extending the life of your new fillings.

A white filling is one of the most durable methods used to repair a tooth that is affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth will be removed and then filled with a filling that looks like it is part of the tooth.

There has been much controversy regarding the mercury that is present in conventional silver fillings. TheFDA has conducted many studies in order to determine whether fillings containing mercury pose a risk to dental
patients, especially children and pregnant women. I have been on the forefront of this debate and believe that composite fillings are a far better, safer, and more durable solution than silver fillings. Recently, in 2011 the FDA
convened yet again to assess once more the safety of mercury fillings. I was invited to speak on Channel 7 Eyewitness News regarding the meeting and my experiences with safety issues regarding amalgam fillings. I clearly expressed my firm belief that mercury fillings are truly a thing of the past and the composite fillings are a much safer, more effective option for restoring a tooth.
